Among the many islands that make up Indonesia lies the lush and vibrant island of Bali, long known for its rich volcanic soils and ideal coffee-growing climate. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Indonesian government introduced programs to revitalize coffee production across the island, distributing seedlings to local farmers and encouraging expanded cultivation.

Today, much of Bali’s coffee is grown by small family farms under the traditional Subak Abian system—community-based farming organizations that oversee both agricultural practices and spiritual traditions tied to the land. Coffee trees, often varieties of Bourbon and Typica, are grown under shade from trees such as Erythrina, Albizia, and citrus, creating a balanced ecosystem that supports both quality coffee and sustainable farming.
